Lymphoedema is a condition that can significantly impact quality of life, particularly for cancer patients who have undergone lymph node removal or radiation therapy.
Early detection is critical in preventing the progression of lymphoedema.
At Physio Living, we are committed to implementing the most up-to-date, science-based tools to improve the lives of those at risk. One of the most groundbreaking advancements in lymphoedema detection and management is the SOZO Digital Health Platform by ImpediMed.
Physio Living are excited to now offer SOZO digital Health assessments!
Why Early Detection Matters
Signs of early stage Lymphoedema are subtle, and difficult to quantify, with fluid accumulation occurring before visible swelling appears.
Research has shown that early intervention can reduce the progression to chronic lymphoedema in breast cancer patients (PREVENT trial).
The SOZO device, using bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS), allows clinicians to detect fluid changes at a subclinical stage, enabling timely intervention and significantly improving patient outcomes.
How the SOZO Device Works
The SOZO device measures L-Dex scores, which indicate fluid imbalances in the body, comparing limb to limb. This non-invasive, rapid assessment takes just 30 seconds and provides valuable insights into a patient’s risk of developing lymphoedema.
Stand on the SOZO device and a small electric charge is passed through the tissues. Computer analysis converts the ease with which the charge moves through the tissues to a score known as the L-Dex.
By integrating bioimpedance spectroscopy, SOZO offers a more precise and effective method of monitoring lymphoedema compared to traditional tape measurements. The SOZO is able to accurately detect fluid changes of just 2 tablespoons of fluid.
The SOZO device can also measure several indicators of body composition and skeletal muscle mass. This can help your Oncology care team to monitor your progress throughout cancer treatments, indicating when to implement strategies to support strength and nutrition during treatment.
Who is the SOZO device not suitable for?
Those with a cardiac pacemaker, or those who may be pregnant.
SOZO in Research & Clinical Practice
The SOZO device is not only transforming clinical care but is also playing a pivotal role in research. Studies, including the PREVENT trial, have validated the effectiveness of BIS technology in detecting and preventing lymphoedema.
Our Commitment to Science-Based Care
At Physio Living, we are dedicated to staying at the forefront of innovation.
By utilising the SOZO device, we ensure that our patients receive the best possible care, backed by scientific evidence. Our approach includes:
Routine screening for at-risk individuals using SOZO.
