Meet Dr Aoife McGarvey

Dr Aoife McGarvey is a recognised leader in physiotherapy and lymphoedema management for head and neck cancer, which was the topic of her PhD. Aoife has led multiple funded clinical trials focused on improving physical recovery and quality of life for cancer survivors and is a Conjoint Lecturer at the University of Newcastle. She has been an invited presenter at several national and international cancer conferences over the past 20 years.

Dr Aoife McGarvey is the Director and Founder of Physio Living. She is a founding member of the Konara Head and Neck Cancer Multidisciplinary Team which meets fortnightly at Hunter ENT. Aoife also is a founding member of the Newcastle Facial Nerve team.

Her clinical and research expertise centres on the early identification and proactive management of treatment-related complications, helping patients achieve faster recovery, improved function, and better long-term outcomes following cancer treatment. 

Dr Aoife McGarvey is part of Head and Neck Cancer Australia’s Expert Clinical Advisory Committee and Clinical Community of Practice Committee. Between 2024 to 2026 she was the Secretary and Executive Board Member of the Australian and NZ Head and Neck Cancer Society.

Qualifications

PhD (Physiotherapy) University of Newcastle, 2015. Thesis titled “Physiotherapy for head and neck cancer” was awarded the University of Newcastle’s Research Higher Degree Excellence Award for the Faculty of Health and Medicine.
