Ms B came to see Dr Aoife McGarvey with several years of facial swelling involving her cheek and around her eye. She had a rare type of cancer as a 12-year-old, which was treated with radical surgery and radiation involving her neck and face.
Ms B had lots of neck stiffness and hardness of the tissues, as well as puffiness of the cheek and around the eye which often affected her ability to fully open her left eye and see fully.
Our main goals were to improve her neck stiffness and movement and reduce her facial swelling so she could improve her vision.
We opted for a combination of treatment options which included:
Low level laser therapy to her neck and near the ear. This is a photochemical treatment that works on scar tissue from radiation to soften it.
A soft textured neck compression garment called Comfiwave®. She wore this at home during the day.
Manual lymphatic drainage massage to the tissues around the eye and cheekbone areas using our Hivamat® Deep Oscillation machine
Physiotherapy manual techniques to improve her cervical spine mobility
Targeted exercises for her lymphatic system and neck
After 3 sessions Ms B had a dramatic improvement to her neck flexibility, pain and movement and her eye swelling improving her vision. Thank you for allowing us to share your story.
