World Physiotherapy Day!
This slide explains the common concerns about neck stiffness that many head and neck cancer survivors experience after cancer treatment. Radiation therapy often leads to long term fibrotic changes of soft tissues, causing stiffness and discomfort of the neck. There are however several management options that can greatly help the pain and restriction caused by this tissue change, both in the short and long term such as specific stretches, postural correction, core stability exercises, massage and laser therapy. Heat over the area from a wheat bag or hot pack is best to avoided as lack of sensation in the neck is common.
